The meaning of the month of Ramadan
The month of Ramadan is approaching, this month is the 9th month in the Hijriyah calendar and is known as Sayyidusy-Syuhur or the head of all months. This is written in the following Hadith:
“The month of Ramadan has come to you, the ruler of all months. So welcome to him. The month of Shaum has come bringing all kinds of blessings. So what a glorious guest that has come.” (HR Ath-Thabrani).
Ustaz Ahmad Zarkasih said that Ramadan comes from the word Romadh which means hot or pungent. Because in the month of Ramadan the heat is more intense than in other months. Imam Al-Qurthubi explained in his commentary that this is because in the month of Ramadan, sins are nullified by good deeds.
However, the name Ramadan dates back to the Hijri calendar in 412 AD, where the convention of the high-level Arab traders and tribes in Mecca fixed the names of the months to facilitate their trade affairs.
Thus the names of the 12 months are: 1st Muharram 2nd Shafar 3rd Rabi’al-Awwal 4th Rabi’al-Tsani 5th Jumada Ula 6th Jumadal Tsaniyah 7th Rajab 8th Sha’ban 9th Ramadhan 10 Shawwal 11 .Dzulqa’dah and 12. Dzulhijjah.
